- Synopsis
- The setting is Sicily in the latter half of the Fifties. Cinisi, a small town in the province of Palermo, is renowned only for its airport, Punta Raisi, used by powerful local Mafia bosses for trafficking. The town is also home to young Peppino Impastato, who lives just a hundred steps away from local mob boss Tano Badalamenti. The close ties between the two families are shrouded in a vow of silence. Peppino, who cannot comprehend the reasons behind his family’s loyalty, badgers his father with questions about the activities of the Mafioso, but in return receives stony silence. In 1968, now an adolescent, Peppino embraces the social and political ideals of his generation and openly rejects his father’s ideas, taking part in a protest against plans to expand the airport that involve compulsory requisition of land from local farmers. Over the next few years, he sets up a local newspaper as well as "Radio out", an independent radio station that speaks out against the Mafia, poking fun at its members and those who protect them. He eventually incurs the wrath of Badalamenti – whom he nicknames Tano Seduto – and the disapproval of his family. As he becomes more and more popular, the courageous Impastato attracts the attention of the Italian communist party, which contacts him to offer its support. But the party’s excessive caution fails to win Peppino over, and he carries on his mission independently...
