- Synopsis
- Gangling and doe-eyed high school senior Paulie is a mischievous lad desperately seeking to experience life. He switches religions (from Greek Orthodox to Catholic) in order to be close to an Irish boy he lusts after, kisses a nun, wrestles and masturbates with a classmate, French kisses his girlfriend and falls in love with his drama teacher Noel. Paulie doesn't care if he gets in trouble - his parents call him "weird" - we call him adorable. Set in the early 1980s, Paulie feels stifled by his nagging mom (Julie Kavner) and macho dad (Stephen Lang). Our cute misfit tries out for track, guitar lessons, drum major, and most satisfying, acting. When Noel, the nervous, idealistic and attractive 20-year-old student teacher mounts a musical theatre production of Nathaniel Hawthorne's “The Scarlet Letter,” Jamie becomes entranced not only with the show but with Noel as well.
