- Synopsis
- Cale (the radiant young Fanning) is the wise-beyond-her-years daughter of Lilly (Shue) and Ben Crane (Russell), who are slowly being pulled apart by the declining fortunes of the family horse farm. Cale pins her hopes to save the farm - and her parents’ marriage - on the past glory she has only heard about from her grandfather, Pop (the venerable Kris Kristofferson), who still lives on the property despite a long-standing bitterness between father and son. Once a champion racehorse breeder, Ben now works as a trainer for the big-money stables ruling the region and takes the starry-eyed Cale to work with him one day. There, Ben is unable to convince his haughty employer that a promising young mare is injured and should not run, and Cale watches in horror as the beautiful horse tumbles during its race.
Loath to have Cale watch as the animal is put down, Ben quits his unrewarding job and takes the wounded horse, Soñador, home to the Crane family’s empty barn. He lures two faithful assistants, Balon (Luis Guzmán) and Manolin (Freddy Rodríguez), to join them and together they struggle to nurse Soñador - whose name means “dreamer” - back to health. The hard knocks keep coming, but Pop shares his old-school know-how, Cale makes late-night visits to feed the patient popsicles and the Cranes begin to mend their fences - and soon Soñador is back on the track and ready to run. Ben risks every last dime and swallows his pride to enter the horse in the prestigious Breeder’s Cup Classic, where this marvellous film convinces us that anything is indeed possible. When Soñador charges out of the gate in her big race, all of our wildest dreams run with her.-
