- Synopsis
- irst to arrive in the morning, last to leave at night, thirtysomething Carla (Emmanuelle Devos) has been working conscientiously as a senior secretary for a property development firm for years. Instead of being recognised and rewarded for her diligence, however, Carla is exploited and ridiculed by her predominantly male colleagues. Carla also suffers from impaired hearing, and the director effectively cuts off sound to pull us into her isolated world. Though clearly on the lookout for love, Carla spends much of her time babysitting for a sexually active friend. Her Prince Charming arrives in the form of ex-con, Paul (a scruffy Vincent Cassel), who applies for the post as her assistant, despite having no particular skills or aptitude for the job. Covering his mistakes, Carla cultivates Paul as a friend, an accomplice and a means of escaping the tedium of her daily existence. As Paul, fresh out of jail, hapless and homeless, warily becomes the object of her charity, he becomes increasingly intrigued at her ability to read lips. While he becomes her defender in the workplace, she agrees to spy on a gang working on a heist.
