- Synopsis
- This respectful adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novel of the Spanish Civil War was one of the most sensational and popular films to come out of wartime Hollywood. Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman were Hemingway's personal choices for the roles of Robert Jordan, the soldier of fortune who comes to blow up a Falangist bridge, and Maria, the brutalized peasant girl he falls in love with. Perhaps more impressive are the performances of Akim Tamiroff and Katina Paxinou as the Partisan guerilla leaders Pablo and Pilar.

- Critics' reviews
-
-
"The whole thing became amorphous and confused. Paramount did rather better by the romance than the politics; Ingrid Bergman is lovely and affecting as Maria."
-
"Today it seems remote and overblown, with Bergman, Young's score and Ray Rennahan's muted color photography the chief compensating factors. "
-
"Cast mostly with Russians in all the Hispanic roles, this glamourfest is Hollywood politics at its most apolitical, lacking even the energy of a good B movie."
-
"Sam Wood's direction is limited to forced perspective compositions and hollow, incantatory line readings, but the craggy landscape shines under Ray Rennahan's Technicolor cinematography."
