- Four black regiments of the U.S. Army—the 9th and 10th Cavalry and 24th and 25th Infantry—fought in the Spanish-American War. Some of them were called the “Invincibles,” or the “Immunes,” because it was thought they would be more resistant to tropical diseases in Cuba and the Philippines.
